Care wins in Japan, Wyber at Box Hill
One of our top distance runners in recent years, Hywel Care is currently teaching in Japan but continuing to perform well. On Sunday he won the Kitanagoya 10K in an extremely close finish. Running together with Youhei Nokzaki, who had run a 30.17 10K the weekend before, they upped the pace with 2K to go and then the lead changed hands several times in the last 200m, but Hywel got the verdict, clocking 30mins 36secs. He won a voucher for a hotel stay in a nice skiing area of Japan, a pair of 1 day lift passes, some running kit and a bumper pack of ramen (noodles).
Meanwhile, in Surrey, Harold Wyber went one better than last year's second place when he won the 32nd edition of the well-known Box Hill Fell Race. Run over 7.5 miles with 1700 feet of ascent, this year the course was covered in snow. Ultimately he won by a minute, but he was initially given a strong challenge by Michael Fanning, especially on the descents.
In the Chingford League CC race held in Hackney, U20 James Stockings finished a good third behind 2:16 marathon man Paul Martelletti of Victoria Park and Eoin Pierce of Enfield & Haringey. In finishing 12th, Rob Cox had his best CC run to date for the club.
